Another Great Baseball Hitting Tip

green monster fenway parkWhat I want to talk about in this article is your first home run. I know there are a lot of excited ball players who just want to hit a home run and get it out of the way so they can either concentrate on hitting for average or hitting more home runs. To be honest with you, I never once, that I can remember, ever went up to bat to hit a home run.

Most of the time I went up to bat, I was looking for a good pitch to hit the ball into the outfield. That’s what I learned during my 14 years playing baseball. You need to work hard, improve your fundamentals and consistently hit line drives. I learned this from coaches, books and watching Major League Baseball players.

Here’s the tip … home runs will come. Be patient and keep getting solid contact on the ball and the home runs will come. I remember my very first home run. I was a sophomore in high school. It was a fall league baseball game and it was at night. It wasn’t the nicest ballpark. In fact, it was a dirt infield instead of grass and there was another field behind it with no fence separating the left field. However, in right field there was a huge fence. I don’t remember how high it was, but it looked like a chain-link version of the Green Monster from Fenway Park.  If you hit anything over that fence it was gobbled up by whatever creature was lurking in the dark.

I remember it very well. I swung at the pitch like I always swing the bat but there was something different about the way the ball hit the bat. It was as if I didn’t even feel the ball make contact. You just heard a solid, "crack!" and the ball went sailing. In fact, most of us lost sight of the ball. It vanished into the darkness and when I was running to first base I asked myself, "did I just hit my first home run over the chain-linked monster fence?" Indeed I did. Guess what? I never got that ball. My first home run ball is on the trophy case of … I don’t know what!

Again, the great baseball hitting tip that I have for you is to work hard, be patient and swing like you normally would. Your home runs will come. Trust me.
