Baseball Hitting Practice
Oh yeah, baseball hitting practice! That was my absolute most favorite thing to do during my 14 years of playing baseball. It was also the last part of practice every year. You’ve got the stretching, warming up, fielding drills, running drills, game situation fielding and then finally hitting practice.
I’m not exactly sure why coaches usually run practice like that. I prefer to mix things up when coaching but that’s a different story. What it did however was build up the anticipation and when you finally had your turn it paid off. You either had to get pushy and basically invite yourself to bat next or you waited until most people hit and the coach asked, "who hasn’t hit yet?"
You rush up there, take a few deep breaths and the hitting practice pitcher is already throwing the ball. You only get a certain number of pitches so you have to go up there hacking at everything thrown. Or do you?
Perhaps sometimes, but I would recommend something different. This is your own personal time to work on hitting with a live pitcher throwing. Here are some tips that you should consider for your baseball hitting practice.
- Treat hitting practice just like a game situation – Look for pitches to drive into the outfield.
- Hit five balls to left field, five balls to center field and five balls to right field – Spreading it out will help you come game time especially when you need to hit the ball to a certain part of the field to move a runner over.
- Bunt the first two balls. One down the third base line and one down the first base line – Really focus on good form. Don’t get lazy!
- Remain confident just like in a game and be ready to attack each pitch. Let your coaches know that you take batting practice seriously.
- Know the strike zone. If the ball is way too high, low, outside or inside, don’t swing. Seriously, don’t swing at bad pitches. It won’t do you any good.
If you treat your baseball hitting practice like this then you will be better prepared to hit during the real games. Remain consistent in your approach to practice and have fun at the same time. It’s good to have balance and remain loose in practice just as much as it’s important to be serious and work hard.
