Bat Swing Mechanics

It’s important for all hitters, including high school level as well as Little League level, to know, learn and carry out proper bat swing mechanics. Just as you would first learn and then polish your throwing and catching, you would then move on to the basics in hitting.

It’s so important to learn these mechanics as early as possible because it helps prevent you from having mechanical breakdowns in your later playing days. Even Major League Baseball players still tweak their mechanics when they need to. Fortunately for them, they have hitting coaches available to them every day.

Many of us don’t have a personal hitting coach but I was blessed to have a great father who taught me all the basics from the beginning. I still have visions of my father teaching my brother and I baseball in the front yard of our home in Redmond, Washington. I had a ton of fun and learned all of the proper bat swing mechanics that enabled me to have a nice playing career.

Some of the basics you should pay attention to, learn and practice are:

It doesn’t matter where the ball is pitched, make sure you maintain a consistent, smooth swing. Hold the bat like you normally would and practice your swing. Your eyes should always be on the ball with your head pointed towards the pitcher. As you swing, extend your arms and when you make contact with the ball your head should be looking slightly down. You can’t hit what you can’t see!

Keep your hips and front shoulder back and wait for the ball. Your trigger motion gets your swing started and once your weight begins to shift forward again that is when your hips and shoulder open up and you hit the ball.

If you feel like you’ve got something wrong with your bat swing mechanics don’t worry because all you have to do is identify where you might be having an issue. Get advice from your dad or coaches and patiently try and work out the kinks.
