Batting Practice at a Pro Baseball Tryout
I’ve recently answered questions from ball players about batting practice at pro baseball tryouts. They want to know what it’s like. I am able to answer quickly because some of my old teammates and myself once went to such a tryout.
The pro tryout was something you would get real excited about as a young ball player because we all wanted to play Major League Baseball. That means that you would do anything you could to let scouts and college coaches see your skills.
I went to a Cincinatti Reds tryout in Tennessee and I will always remember it. There was at least one major scout there and he had around five helpers. There were around 150 ball players there so it was quite crowded. We started off warming up, then running the 40-yard dash, followed by infield and outfield drills. Then came batting practice.
There were many of us so there was a long line just to get some batting practice in. The batting practice pitcher was very quick and ready to go. There was no delay. You only got a limited number of pitches to hit too. I remember getting maybe 10 swings of the bat. Here are my tips for you when it comes to batting practice.
- Save as much energy as you can for the batting practice portion of the tryout. You need to be able to hit the ball well and hard. This means sleeping well the night before and eating healthy. Drink plenty of pure water.
- Mentally be prepared the night before and the morning of the tryout. Visualize yourself hitting the ball exactly the way you want to.
- Don’t be timid! Do not get caught at the end of the line. Get in the front of the line to hit because the pitcher will have better pitches and more patience. The scout will also be watching more intensely. You are going to need to "wow" the scout.
- Get comfortable in the batter’s box quickly. You don’t have much time so get set fast and try to relax. Hit the ball as solid as you can. Don’t try to hit home runs.
At the end of the tryout the scout basically told us that nobody there had the talent to make it to the Major Leagues and then he walked away. If that happens to your group, don’t worry about it. Keep working hard and striving for your dreams to come true. There are several times per year that you can participate in batting practice at a pro baseball tryout. Make sure you know the dates so you can prepare properly each time. If you know of any scouts in your area then get to know them and swap contact information. You never know what good networking can do for your baseball career.
