Develop a Nice Baseball Power Swing
I sent out a survey to my subscribers and asked them one simple question at the end. "What else can we teach you about baseball hitting?" One respondent wanted tips on how to develop a nice baseball power swing.
Hitting with power seems to be the most popular thing today, but players should be careful to not think power is the only way to get a scholarship. That just isn’t true. I’ve known many players over the years who have "power" but strike out every other time. They end up not even playing college baseball.
I’ve also seen hundreds of players with no homerun power snatch up scholarships all over the country.
Am I saying that a baseball power swing is bad? No. But there are many other hitting attributes you need to have as well.
You can read our baseball hitting articles to familiarize yourself with hitting mechanics and other mechanics you need to be a more complete hitter. Here are some fast ways to get more power.
Full extension. To get maximum power you must have your arms fully extended upon impact with the ball. There are many examples out there but take a look at video and pictures of Ken Griffey Jr. who had one of the best swings in baseball history. It was rare to see him hit one out of the park without extending his arms.
Stay conditioned through exercise and nutrition. As you grow physically you want to match that height with strength and you can do that through eating healthy and lifting weights. A proper baseball lifting program can be supervised by a trainer, your coach or parent.
Proper weight transfer. It begins with weight management. The proper shifting of weight so that at impact with the ball you have generated the most power you possibly could. Without that weight going forward as you swing you are doomed to hit the ball only in the infield.
