How To Hit a Baseball Mentally

how to hit a baseball mentally"They had their game plan and I didn’t have mine. I was chasing pitches. I wasn’t myself. Mentally, I have to get sharper, make the adjustments, take the walk when they’re giving it to me."  That is a direct quote taken from a college baseball player during the 2010 season.  It gives you a glimpse into something that will help you learn how to hit a baseball mentally.

When I read this article I immediately had an a-ha moment. I was just writing about this very situation the other day. I personally experienced this at one point in my hitting career.  Maybe you have experienced this too.  If you are a coach then pay attention because you may learn something new to help your players.

It’s very important to remain confident and in control whether you are in a minor slump or not. You should also have a consistent, never changing swing with proper hitting mechanics and a slightly up swing. I also teach patience and waiting for the ball. Chasing pitches means you’re not being selective at the plate. Keep patient and wait for the ball to come.

Baseball is great because you have three strikes every at bat. That means that you don’t have to swing at the pitch that’s barely a strike on the far outside corner. You have the opportunity to wait for your pitch. Remain aggressive and ready to attack each time, but wait for your pitch.  Now, if you study certain pitchers you will find out that they throw a fastball strike on every first pitch.  If you feel comfortable and confident and your coach is okay with it, then you can swing at the first pitch.  In the end, I would still advise you to think about taking a pitch and really waiting for the right one.

A mental slump happens because you begin to doubt yourself and get down. The cure is to remain confident knowing that you do have the ability to get a hit.  In this case, the pitcher isn’t the one causing you to make an out.  You are in the driver’s seat because you have the chance to make things better by practicing more confidence.  It doesn’t have to only be in the games either.  You can practice confidence each and every day in your normal life. Plus, every time you have batting practice or participate in hitting drills, you can increase your confidence with each great swing.

Practicing how to hit a baseball mentally will help you become a better hitter. If you ever get into one of those slumps, you’ll be better equipped to find your way out quickly so that you can hit better and help your team win.
