How To Teach Kids To Hit a Baseball

I was asked if hitting instruction was the same or different for kids versus older players. The simple answer was yes and no. I will explain this a little later. So the question remains … can you learn how to teach kids to hit a baseball properly?

Absolutely! Let us answer the first question. The basic fundamentals of hitting are the same throughout baseball. It doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or a college player. Proper hitting fundamentals remain the same and should be taught to kids early on. Let’s go over some basic fundamentals that are the same.

• Proper hitting stance shoulder width apart – At this time don’t mess with open or closed stances.
• Hold the bat vertical 6-8 inches away from chest level – The bat should be angled slightly over the back shoulder.
• Trigger mechanism to shift weight back to front at contact – This is what generates the power in your swing.
• Keep eyes on the ball at all times – You won’t hit anything that you don’t see.  That is a fact.
• Smooth, consistent swing through the hitting zone – You will feel most comfortable if you have a set way to swing the bat.

Those are just a few baseball hitting fundamentals.

Now for the "no" answer. When teaching kids how to hit a baseball you want to adjust your approach. You need to be very patient with kids. Don’t rush them and definitely don’t get upset with them. You need to make sure they are having fun. If you are going over hitting drills with kids and you see that after 30 minutes they are bored, then you need to move on to another part of practice, another hitting drill or something different all together.

Trust me, 30 minutes of well-planned hitting practice is more than enough for a small group of kids.
