Right Timing To Hit The Baseball

baseballI’ve recently listened to questions from youth ball players about the right timing to hit the baseball. They want to know how to get the right timing and how to keep it. This is a great question especially from inexperienced hitters.

The one thing baseball players can brag about is that it’s harder to hit a baseball than any other feat in sports. That is a shared opinion. Remember, if you get three hits out of ten at-bats then you are considered a top hitter.

Having the right timing is important for obvious reasons. With the wrong timing you might miss the ball. It all starts with keeping your eyes on the ball at all times. From the moment it leaves the pitcher’s hand to the moment you make contact, your eyes should be fixed on that ball.

Your trigger is what starts your timing. It activates your weight transfer from front to back to front again as you swing. Some players lift their front foot to get the swing started and some use their hands to start.

You can start all of this while practicing hitting off a tee. Then you can practice by having someone soft toss you the ball while hitting it into a protective screen. Next is real live batting practice where someone pitches the ball to you. You will get to know instinctively when the ball will arrive out in front of the plate.

Remember not to open up your hips and front shoulder too soon when you swing because that may throw off your timing a bit and cause you to swing and miss or hit a soft ground ball. Wait for the ball and maintain a smooth but aggressive swing. Practice the drills we discussed earlier and in no time you will have the right timing to hit the baseball.
